William Kern was a University of Washington professor who worked closely with Adam Baylin in creating Zzyzx. He later removed Adam from power to use the experiments for his own deeds.

[edit] Before season 1
During the 80's, Kern was a professor at the University of Washington. He worked on maximizing brain power and worked closely with a student named Adam Baylin until Adam suddenly disappeared.
It was eventually revealed that Adam started a company called Zzyzx to work on maximizing brain power, but was eventually forced into hiding after Kern kicked him out with help from Brian Taylor who pretended to be Adam's friend.
Kern put 781227 to his own battery of tests, but was dismayed when he wasn't responding well to them. After 781227 downloaded all of the Zzyzx information, he ordered his extermination.
Tom Foss rescued Kyle and took him out of the Zzyzx complex; Kern went out to retrieve him. Kern held Tom at gunpoint and ordered Kyle back. Tom overpowered him and shot and killed Kern.

Kyle had his memory erased and knew nothing of Kern's death until having a short flashback during rainstorm. He matched the face to the name of a missing professor: William Kern.
After the bones in the woods were confirmed, Kyle went to the University of Washington and got answers from Kern's research assistant Anna Manfredi. Finally, Kyle's memories came back in full and realized that Tom Foss was trying to protect him.

Kyle returned to the then-demolished Zzyzx complex on a camping trip, repeatedly having flashbacks of William Kern's takeover of Zzyzx and eventual ordering of 781227's extermination.
