Sarah Emerson was Adam Baylin's girlfriend, from whom Jessi was cloned.

[edit] Before season 2
When Sarah Emerson attended the University of Washington, she won many awards, and once got in trouble for painting the answers to an exam in a lecture hall, along with the Latnok symbol.
Sarah and Adam Baylin began dating sometime before 1982, and frequented a diner just off of route 12 near Seattle. They etched their initials into a table during their last trip to the diner.
Sometime later, Sarah supposedly died and Brian Taylor extracted her DNA in order to create Jessi using Adam's research.
It should be noted that Sarah's origins have not been disclosed. Whether she was a manipulated gestation like Adam, has not been revealed. However, throughout the series it seems that Sarah and Adam may have more in common than simple intelligence. As she also possessed many inhuman abilities. It can be safely assumed that Sarah is indeed another product of the Einstein gestation manipulation project.
[edit] Season 2
While venturing into the ruins of Zzyzx, Kyle had flashbacks that eventually led him to a locked box in Adam Baylin's old office. He realized he needed the Latnok ring in order to open it and together with Declan McDonough and Tom Foss, he infiltrated Madacorp and stole the ring off of Julian Ballantine's finger.
He returned home and opened the box, to a see a picture of a young Adam Baylin and his lover, who looked exactly like Jessi. Kyle decided to investigate Jessi, realizing she too was a Zzyzx experiment. Jessi also found out and ran away.
Kyle found her and showed her the picture. She and Kyle followed the clues from the Latnok ring and wondered whether or not Baylin's lover was still alive. They arrived at a diner that Adam and his lover frequented, learning that his lover's name started with S.
It was later revealed that her name was Sarah. Brian Taylor revealed that after Sarah "died", he cloned Jessi from her DNA, and years later was revealed to be her "biological father."
Eventually, Jessi and Kyle looked into Sarah at U-Dub, where she and Adam once attended together. They saw that she painted not only the answers to a test, but the Latnok symbol as well.
